New Hampshire Auto Accidents by the Numbers

Car Accident Attorney NHAccidents in New Hampshire happen. Whether it is because of inappropriate or reckless actions by a driver, poor weather or even a mechanical failure, the result of those accidents can be devastating. According to the CDC, New Hampshire residents and insurance agencies pay out $143 million each year in auto accidents with $51 million of that going toward motor vehicle accidents.

The Numbers

In 2009, it was reported that New Hampshire saw 110 fatalities due to car accidents. In 2010, there was an astounding increase to 128 fatalities. That is almost one person every other day in the state that is killed by an auto accident, while thousands are injured each year.

What is Causing an Increase in Accidents?

There are many theories as to why the number of auto accidents has increased. While there is nothing concrete, the most common reasons are:

  • Winter weather. Wintry weather makes road conditions unsafe, and even an experienced driver may find themselves losing control (read more on winter weather accidents).
  • Distracted driving. Unfortunately, distracted driving is on the rise. With more smart gadgets being released, drivers tend to focus on their screens versus the road.
  • Speeding. These days everyone seems to be in a hurry. In order to get where they need to go, they speed up.
  • Drowsy driving. Whether you have worked a long shift or the other driver has stayed up for two days studying for an exam, lack of sleep severely decreases a person's ability to react on the road.

Can You Avoid Accidents?

There is no sure-fire way to avoid car accidents. After all, you are at the mercy of other drivers sharing the road with you. But, there are ways you can limit your chances and at least drive safe on your end, even if you cannot control other drivers. 1. Skip the fast lane - The fast lane limits your escape routes if a car swerves. By staying in the center lane, you can move left or right to avoid an accident. 2. Scan the road ahead - Do not just look ahead, actually scan your surroundings. You should know what cars are driving by you, ahead of you and behind you - and keep an eye on them. 3. Always keep an eye on your blind spots - Every vehicle has a blind spot, and you need to know yours. Remember that other drivers will have blind spots, too. 4. Drive with both hands on the wheel - If you were to swerve off the road, you cannot control your vehicle as accurately with one hand on the wheel as you can with two. By always driving with two hands on the wheel, you are in more control of your vehicle. 5. Judge other vehicles by their condition - Cars next to you with excessive dents or a poor appearance means that driver does not care about their vehicle - and may have been in multiple accidents before. Keep clear of drivers and vehicles that show the signs of past accidents. 6. Service your car - Have your car serviced regularly, inspecting brakes and tires, and ensuring it is safe.
